Home batteries in Australia: what they cost and what you get back

It stores the solar power your panels make during the day so you can use it at night instead of buying it back from the grid. Most Australian homes with solar self-consume only 30% to 40% of what they generate and export the rest to the grid for a few cents per kWh, only to buy it back at peak rates after dark. A battery typically lifts your self-consumption to around 80%, and cuts what you buy back at peak.
Between $6,420 and $8,145 fully installed across the range we fit, with the federal discount already deducted. Price depends on capacity, whether you need a new hybrid inverter, switchboard condition, and the cable run from your inverter to the battery location.
Rebate figures based on 6.8 certificates per usable kWh (about $250/kWh) for installs in 2026. The first 14 kWh earns the full rate, while larger systems scale based on declining subsidy tiers.

Most Australian households find their sweet spot between 10 and 14 kWh usable storage. There is a strong strategic reason to look at 14 kWh systems: the federal rebate covers 100% of the maximum rate on the first 14 kWh only. Usable capacity added beyond this qualifies for a reduced rate.

Do I need solar panels to get a home battery?
To qualify for the federal rebate, yes, but existing rooftop solar counts, so you do not need to install new panels. Batteries can be installed on homes without solar; and be used to store either cheap or free power.
About $250 per usable kWh, which is 6.8 certificates for every kilowatt-hour installed between 1 May and 31 December 2026. That is roughly $2,500 on a 10 kWh battery and $3,500 on a 14 kWh one. It is applied as an upfront discount, not a cash-back, so there is nothing to claim. It drops on 1 January 2027, and steps down again every January and July until 2030.
Because that is where the full rate stops. The rebate pays the full amount on the first 14 kWh of usable capacity, 60% from 14 to 28 kWh, and 15% from 28 to 50 kWh. Bigger systems still qualify, just not at the same rate per kilowatt-hour.
For the federal rebate, no. Your battery has to be VPP-capable, but you do not have to enrol. Some state schemes are different. WA and SA both require actual VPP participation to get their money.
Distributor approval comes first and typically takes 2 to 3 weeks. Install time depends on the system and your switchboard, and your proposal confirms it.
Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?
Yes. Most retrofits use an AC-coupled battery, which works alongside your existing solar inverter. If your inverter is near end of life, a hybrid inverter replacement can be the better buy. We will tell you which applies.
Is there a rebate in my state on top of the federal one?
It depends where you live. In NSW a virtual power plant incentive of up to about $1,100 can stack, depending on system size and provider. In WA, Synergy customers can get $130 per kWh up to $1,300. Queensland has no state scheme, so Queensland customers receive the federal discount only. Several widely-quoted state schemes have since closed.
