Maserati is continuing its long-term innovation campaign with the launch of the Grecale SUV model. The all-wheel-drive vehicle is positioned in the D segment below the Levante introduced in 2016 and it is already available with combustion engines. In 2023, the Grecale Folgore, a purely battery-powered variant, will follow.
The basis for the Grecale is the Fiat Chrysler Giorgio platform, which is already used for Alfa Romeo’s Giulia and Stelvio, and Jeep’s Grand Cherokee. However, the wheelbase has been extended by almost 9 centimetres for the 4.85 metre long Maserati, which is precisely why the vehicle offers space in the more luxurious segment.
Visually the Italians opted for a puristic design. Its clarity and elegant surfaces creates optical longevity. The electric door handles, which are flush with the sheet metal skin, are a perfect match and it promises aerodynamic advantages.
Various details convey a distinct Maserati DNA while the Grecale looks like what an SUV of its size tends to look like these days. For example, the light signature of the LED headlights and the deep radiator grill creates a family resemblance to the MC20 supercar.
There are also air vents in the front fenders and trident badges in several places. The two-part rear lights reach towards the boot lid and feature the boomerang lights of the 3200 GT with LED light graphics.
At the beginning of 2022 Maserati started to offer the Grecale in three petrol variants including all-wheel-drive. The battery electric version will be powered with two electric motors that deliver 400 kW / 544 hp and 800 Newton metres of torque. Maserati has not yet made any statements about consumption, charging tech or driving values.
