The first and most obvious benefit is the flexibility and ability to use multiple cable types. It also provides better adaptability for different locations, so you never have to worry if you have a compatible cable.
Installation couldn’t be simpler, simply plug one side into the charger and the other side into your EV and its charging time. Store away your cable when not in use to avoid clutter and you’re all done.
Australians tend to appreciate the convenience of untethered chargers, especially with the relative scarcity of available charging stations.
Luckily, you'll find both tethered and untethered chargers at public charging stations. So, depending on your EV type, it may be easier to bring your own cable to plug into the charger.
To install an untethered EV charger, you should hire a professional to handle the installation; this ensures safety and compliance with local regulations. Our certified electricians can make sure the charger is properly wired, grounded, and set up for you.
An untethered charger is a charger with a detachable cable. Unlike a tethered charger, which has a fixed cable that cannot be detached, an untethered charger will need to be manually connected to the charging station.
Untethered chargers let you use your own charging cable that's guaranteed to be compatible with your specific EV model. Why is this helpful? Because public charging stations may have different types of connectors, so having your own cable allows you to be able to plug in no matter what. And for home use, if you get a new EV in the future with a different charging port you won't need to worry about the charging cable being incompatible with an untethered charger. You can just buy a new cable to fit your new car.
Untethered chargers are compatible with most EVs, as long as the appropriate charging cable is used.
To install an untethered EV charger in your home, hire a licenced electrician that is experienced with EV chargers. Set up requires knowledge of the relevant AU/NZS standards and we do not recommend doing it on your own.
